How it gets signed

  1. 1Choose “Use this template”, fill in the fields and read the full motorcycle bill of sale once more.
  2. 2Send it by WhatsApp or email. The other party opens the link on their phone without an account.
  3. 3They tap the brown bar at the bottom that says “Sign as …” and draw their signature with a finger.
  4. 4Everyone gets the signed PDF with its signature certificate. Anyone can check it at signsolu.com/verificar.

Before signing, each signer agrees to sign electronically. The screen links to the electronic signature disclosure the ESIGN Act asks for.

The bill of sale can be signed online. The certificate of title is a separate state document. If your state still uses a paper title, the seller signs it by hand and hands it to the buyer.

Your first ten documents are free and need no card.

For a one-off letter or form, you can also sign it online for free from a PDF or a photo of the paper.

What the law says

Each state’s motor vehicle agency sets how ownership passes. The seller signs over the certificate of title, and the buyer registers the vehicle within the state deadline. Many states ask for a bill of sale too, and a few ask for it to be notarized.

The federal odometer rule covers self-propelled motor vehicles, so street motorcycles carry the mileage statement. Many states do not title dirt bikes used only off road, and there this bill of sale is the main proof of the sale.

The ESIGN Act gives an electronic signature on the bill of sale the same effect as ink.

Street bike, dirt bike or scooter

TypeUsually titled?What the buyer needs
Street motorcycleYesSigned title and bill of sale
Dual-sport, street legalYesSigned title and bill of sale
Dirt bike, off-road onlyDepends on the stateBill of sale, and title if issued
Scooter or mopedDepends on engine size and stateBill of sale, and title if issued

Check your state’s rules for off-road registration stickers and moped plates.

Before you hand over the keys

  1. 1Match the VIN on the frame to the title.
  2. 2Let the buyer test ride with a helmet and a valid license, or ride it for them.
  3. 3Collect payment that has cleared.
  4. 4Sign the bill of sale and the title.
  5. 5Remove your plate if your state requires it.

A worked example

Eric sells his Ninja 400 to Tasha for 4,600 USD in cash. He lists the two keys and the tank bag in clause 3.

Tasha counts the cash, Eric writes a receipt, and both sign the bill of sale on their phones. Eric signs the paper title and keeps his plate.

Mistakes to avoid

  • Frame number not checked. A mismatch can mean a stolen bike.
  • Gear not listed. Buyers and sellers remember differently what was included.
  • Cash without a receipt. Clause 4 records payment, but a receipt helps too.

What changes from state to state

  • Notarization. A few states ask for a notarized bill of sale or title signature.
  • State forms. Some motor vehicle agencies have their own bill of sale form and prefer it.
  • Plates. In many states plates stay with the seller. In others they go with the vehicle.
  • Release of liability. Many states let the seller report the sale online within a few days.
  • Inspections. Emissions or safety checks may be needed before the buyer can register.
  • Sales tax. The buyer pays it at registration in most states, based on the price or a book value.

Check your state motor vehicle agency before the sale. The bill of sale stays the same, only the steps around it change.

After the sale

Cancel your insurance on the motorcycle and report the sale if your state offers a release of liability. Keep the signed bill of sale with your records.

Sample descriptions that hold up

  • Street bike: “2020 Kawasaki Ninja 400, green, VIN JKAEXKG10LDA12345, 9,850 miles, two keys.”
  • Dirt bike: “2019 Honda CRF250F, red, frame number JH2ME1234KK012345, about 120 hours, no title issued.”
  • Scooter: “2022 Vespa Primavera 50, white, VIN ZAPC12345N1234567, 1,200 miles.”

Write the numbers exactly as they appear on the frame and the title.

Checklist for handover day

  1. 1Payment received and cleared.
  2. 2Bill of sale signed by both.
  3. 3Title signed with the mileage, if titled.
  4. 4Keys, manuals and gear handed over.
  5. 5Plate removed if your state requires it.

Avoiding common scams

  • Overpayment checks. A buyer sends more than the price and asks for the difference back. The check later bounces.
  • Fake payment screenshots. Wait until the money shows in your own account.
  • Title washing. Check the motorcycle history for salvage or flood brands before you buy.
  • Shipping requests. A buyer who cannot see the item and wants it shipped at once is a warning sign.

If something feels off, stop the sale. A real buyer will wait for the money to clear.

Share the signed PDF with the buyer before they ride off. They will need it at the motor vehicle office, and you keep the same copy in your account.
